Everything is changing. People are taking the comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke. -- Will Rogers

A special thanks to George Watson, Jeff Farmer, and Bob Beckstrom for boarding up the Red Cross Bergie House. And, a very special thanks to Bob Beckstrom and crew for getting the hot-house up and running. Let's all get behind the project and finish before school starts.

REMEMBER A WORKING CLUB IS A GROWING CLUB WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND A "CAN DO" SPIRIT.

The speaker for this week is Paige Barham, a Certified Nutritionist. The message should be of great interest to all .

Pa Won't Like It

A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of corn. The farmer who lived nearby heard the noise and yelled over to the boy, "Hey Willis, forget your troubles. Come in and visit with us. I'll help you get the wagon up later."
"That's mighty nice of you," Willis answered, "but I don't think Pa would like me to."
"Aw come on boy," the farmer insisted.
"Well okay," the boy finally agreed, and added, "but Pa won't like it."
After a hearty dinner, Willis thanked his host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know Pa is going to be real upset."
"Don't be foolish!" the neighbor said with a smile. "By the way, where is he?"
"Under the wagon."

Bungstarter News - March 12, 2008

El Presidente is back from Hawaii!

Information for the week of March 9th (Board met Monday night and the following is for informational purposes):
  • Financially the club is in good hands with Tom and all is sound.
  • We discussed the possibility of a move to the Senior Center, but waiting for policy and cost analysis. No decision will be make until the membership at large votes up or down.
  • DCM attendance is rising. We are trying to get more members to attend the monthly meeting. The next one is march 20th. We will forward information by e-mail.
  • Elaine brought the following to our attention. The Gov. will be in Napa in May and has ask each club to present awards ( Hickson, Dunlop, Distinguished Kiwanian's Award ) I ask Jeff F, Bob B, and John P to serve as a committee to set up and accept nominations for any of these awards.
  • George as President of the Foundation brought the following: Should we make a donation to the St. Helena Performing Arts Center that is purposed.
  • The Harvest Festival Resolution Committee made their recommendation and as a result I send the resolution to you by separate e-mail. We will discuss in detail at the Wednesday meeting prior to any public statement. Also, The Board met Monday and voted the following to be placed before you for approval Please read and respond with your approval/disapproval and commends. Jay

"The Kiwanis Club of St. Helena, along with many other local non-profits, has been supporting the Harvest Festival for many years. Until recently, this participation has been with the tacit agreement that net profits would be invested in a fund to eventually build a Community
Center in St. Helena. UVCCI has changed this agreement without consulting those non-profits who have for many years loyally supported the original agreement. The Kiwanis Club does not believe it is fair for UVCCI to make this change without consultation and agreement with the non-profits who have supported the Festival for these many years.
Therefore, the Kiwanis Club of St. Helena is formally requesting that UVCCI get the formal agreement of the majority of the non-profit Harvest Festival participants before changing the allocation of any Festival profits or funds from the original intended purpose.
One way to do this is for each non-profit to send a representative to a meeting called by UVCCI for this purpose. Another way is for each non-profit to pass a resolution one way or the other and communicating the results to UVCCI. However it is done it is crucial that UVCCI get the consensus of the St. Helena non-profit community in this important matter."

There are mixed opinions regarding this resolution. We'll talk it out. Stay tuned and stay cool!! (Steve)

  • The following is the meeting schedule for the next few weeks
3/12 Sandi Elles, Napa Valley Farm Bureau
3/19 Charles Gravette, DCM of Napa Valley
3/26 Anne Evans, Napa Valley College Fine Arts Theater
4/2 Diane Dillon, Supervisor Napa County
4/9 Doug Farr, McCain's Campaign Director Napa County Republican

    Other items of interest:
  • St. Helena Chamber -Bocce Tournament -April 26th- Community Clean Up Day -Morning-Need all hands on deck. The Chamber is asking for 200 from the area to help out that day. A chance to show our colors to the community. We plan to field a team of 8 and need a very competitive team.
  • Remember: There are no passengers on Spaceship EARTH, We are all CREW. If every American household turns off the lights during EARTH HOUR on March 29, it will prevent more than 16,500 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
    10am - Crain Park-April 18th

    See you on Wednesday, Jay

Hi All,
Additional information for the Bung Starter:
The flags that we put up on Main Street for holidays during the year have become quite dirty and soiled from car exhaust over the last 4 years. Yesterday, I removed the flags from their poles and took them to Klass Cleaners. Nancy, the owner, will clean them for no charge and we'll have them ready for Memorial Day.Next time you're in Klass Cleaners, be sure to say thanks to Nancy.
Howard

Hi Gang,

Another B.S. item: Craig Bond will be approaching our club for some help sponsoring an annual high school music (jazz) festival. This year's event occured last weekend and he wants to get broader community support. He has one club signed up to provide lunch for all of the kids (6-8 schools send choirs to compete). He's looking for someone to fund the award plaques and ribbons that go to the participants. Just a heads up.

Bob

Here's to St. Patty's Day

Delayed Bung Starter!

Thank you to all who brought visitors last week to the meeting. A room full of people gives energy and excitement, especially to a speaker.

It was great honoring the RLS group with our commitment to build a greenhouse for the children of St. Helena. This shows real heart to our club that members are willing to step forward with money and building skills. More to follow on the building project when that time is ready.

On Wednesday we plan to present the check to the Dirt Angels to start the process, so plan to come and celebrate the passing of the check of $10,500.00, which will be our share of the $21,000 greenhouse cost. Jessie will be present to catch the excitement on film and we hope to get good coverage of the activities of the morning.

Next let me turn to the recruitment of new members. We started the process last week and need to continue inviting individuals to our meetings with the intent of their joining our club. Not only must we invite new members but also get them involved in club activities.

We have great speakers that inspire and are very informative. Our speakers for the next few members are as follows: (see the calendar at right)

Feb. 20 Bart Rhoades The Oxbow Market
Feb. 27 Craig Bond Children's choir update
March 5 is open at present
March 12 Charles Gravett Democratic Party President
March 26 is open at present

The DCM is coming up this Thursday evening, Vaca Valley. Need some interested individuals to volunteer and represent our club at the meeting. I will be out of town for 10 days to Maui.

Week of January 23, 2008

Hello to all St. Helena Kiwanians!
I would like to update you on the Naked Vine and a few other issues......

Naked Vine:
Our major fund raiser in my humble opinion was a great success with almost full club participation. The way the members came together for set up/tear down and running the event was remarkable. This is what Kiwanis is all about, working together to better our community and the children who live here.

We had approximately 220 in attendance and a gross take of $36,000-$40,000 with expenses of about $15,000 giving us net $ 22000-$25000. This compares with previous years of
20005 $21933
2006 $22645
2007 $17700
2008 $23000-25000

As you can see, we experienced a slight increase from the average. We can increase this even more next year if we can do the following:
1.) Increase the attendance by 50-75
2.) Increase the number of bidders on the live/silent auction with not only wine but other items of interest, This could be high end restaurants, get away vacations or weekends
3.) Increase our sponsorships by $5000, this year we received $5500
4.) Come up with big ticket item that will drew attendance without breaking the bank.

Other items came be listed and your input/comments are welcome. I would like to see all the members active on a committee and take ownership for success.

A more extensive accounting will take place in a few weeks when all income and receipts are total accounted . Tom D does an outstanding job in this area. We should be proud to have him as a member.

I would to thank Bob B, Jeff F, Chris M. and Elaine M-W for their very active roles in art, wine, and organizational expertise. Others such as George W, Dave K, Bill E, Howard W, Bill S, plus the many who can out at 8am to set up and stayed until the clean up was complete.

I would like to thank Tom K, Cynthia, and Anne E. for decorating skills. The winery was beautiful although we might need to rethink our food table locations. What I mean is more than one feeding area. Some people come to eat and never leave the area. Maybe food tables scattered around like the wine pouring tables are.

The sponsorship program brought in $5500 and I would like to thank Del B, Jeff F, Tom D, and George/Elaine M-W. I would like to thank our event sponsor, John H and his group who came through big time. I would also like to thank John A for his contribution and Howard's friend from Chicago who donated $1000 to our event.

Other issues:
Our next area of emphasis will be on membership recruitment.
We have a new recruit sponsored by Jan D, with another by Bob B, Del I would like to see our Chief become a member. do you think you could be helpful in this area.
Lets recruit 9 new members this year and make Feb.-March the months to do it.

Diane B will be visiting us on Feb.13 and maybe at our Board meeting on Feb. 11, which will be a joint club/foundation meeting . Let's all be present and show her our St. Helena spirit. It would be a high day if all members would be in attendance.

Other members that I would like to thank

Steve E for his work on the Bung Starter, Howard W for his always being on time with the set up of the room and running the raffle, which provides fun and money for our members and club.
Mel V, and George W for helping Howard with set up, Bob D for being the faithful and ever active secretary of the club, Jim A, Elaine M-W, Don R, Jessie D, Dave K, Bill E, Tom D Jeff F for being very active Board members, George W for his chairmanship of the Foundation.

Finally I would like to thank the dirty babes or dirt angels ( not sure of their present organizational name) and wish them much success in the RLS/ Kiwanis project. Together we will make this successful!

Congradulations! We beat the odds one more year!

Jay

Week of January 9, 2008

This message for the next 10 days is the Naked Vine. To be success we as a club must be active each day in the promotion of our club and it’s major fund raiser–THE NAKED VINE– Other organizations raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and we can raise more if we set our sights higher. The money goes for a great cause by helping the students of St. Helena High continue on to college. We have a great tradition of community involvement and being proactive in the valley.

Let’s all get behind the NAKED VINE event and make this year a time of major movement toward the best year every.
I thank all who have labored by selling tickets, getting the best in art and wine for the auction, getting major donors to give and also giving of one’s our money to make this event very success.

This year we must recruit more members and work to retain our present members by being more receptive to their needs. Also being more involved in the community by sharing our mission and goals of making this a better place for children to live and thrive.

I want to thank the planning committee and single out Bob B, Jeff F, Elaine M-W, and John H for going the extra mile in making this NAKED VINE event the success it is this year
9 More Shopping Days until Naked Vine. We need a large turnout to this great event. Tell people about the art show. It’s going to be terrific. And where else can you get such bargains on collectible wines? And if people get some new clothes for Christmas, this can be their first chance to show them off. Tickets are $50 each . Our goal is to sell 300 which will be a snap if every club member sells 10.
Naked Vine signups. You can help by...
1. Contacting wineries and donors to follow up solicitation letters.
2. Pick up donations from wineries, etc. and deliver to 55 Degrees.
3. Organize 2-3 Lollapalooza auction lots (e.g., dinner with Arnold).
4. Help with art show (receive submissions, transport art, set up, etc.).
5. Set up on January 23 (haul wine; display lots; build stage; etc.).
6. Work the check-in and cash-out table (greet folks; take their money).
7. Monitor auctions (close silent auction tables; help with live auction).
8. Run games in the Games Arcade (Ring the Neck, , etc.).
9. Clean up (stay late; break down displays; haul stuff; finish the wine).

WEEK OF JANUARY 2, 2008

Week of January 2, 2008

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
(Please give your attention to the club calendar on the right!)
From El Presidente, Jay:
Happy New Year’s to all and a wonderful new beginning to our club. This next year will bring many new members and ideas to make our time together very productive and a time to improve our community of St. Helena.
I am encouraged by how our members step to the plate and get things done. This year let’s be the agent of change for the RLS project, assist with the skate-board program, and make the two fund raiser ( Golf and Naked Vine ) the best and most productive ever.
Let’s bring more members into the club and get the existing members that don’t attend more active.
Members let your officers know your thoughts on how to make St. Helena Kiwanis a better club. Every member working will make the club grow and prosper
17 More Shopping Days until Naked Vine.
The Naked Vine is upon us and needs our full attention to make it a very successful profitable night. Sell the tickets and make the contacts for wine to auction that night
We need more sponsors at the business and corporate levels. Talk to your friends and business acquaintances and ask for support.
If you don’t know your responsibilies that night, let me know.
We have a planning meeting this Friday at Gillwood’s 7:30am to wrap up the details.

NOW BACK TO THE PARTY

Week of December 19, 2007

The big Christmas Party will be here this Wednesday, December 19, 6:00 P.M. at American Legion Hall. Don’t forget to come in festive ware and enjoy a great evening planned by Elaine. Everyone needs to bring a gift and a bottle of wine to share. This occasion gives us time to meet and greet the spouses of our members.

The senior luncheon last Sunday was big success!! Look at the photos on the Main Page!!

with many Kiwanian’s helping out and serving. Everyone I spoke with thanked us for a chance to come out and enjoy a festive time together with other people in town. We do a great service. Thank you, Del and Elaine and all that helped for organizing this event.
Next year let’s make it even larger and always be helpful to a population that is at times forgotten.

Ticketmeister George reminds us that if we each sell one ticket per week we’ll sell our quota of tickets.

Need each member to be a part of the Naked Vine by selling tickets and helping with that night’s activities. Remember all members working together can make a great NAKED VINE.
Help by finding sponsors and make the contact.
